Over 3,000 tax returns filed on Christmas Day

A total of 3,275 taxpayers filed their annual self-assessment tax returns on Christmas Day 2022, according to HMRC.

Over 22,000 customers logged onto the HMRC website to submit their online form for the 2021/22 tax year between 24 and 26 December.

HMRC reported that 8,474 tax returns were submitted on Christmas Eve, with 141 people opting to file between 11:00 pm and 11:59 pm - just in time to enjoy the Christmas festivities.

A further 10,311 taxpayers took the time to complete their self-assessment forms on Boxing Day, with peak time falling between 12:00 am and 12:59 am when 953 returns were received.

The deadline to file and pay any tax owed for the 2021/22 tax year is less than a month away, on 31 January 2023. HMRC urges customers to complete their returns as soon as possible to avoid facing penalties for late payment.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC director general for customer services, said:

"We are grateful to those customers who have already filed their tax returns. For anyone who is yet to make a start, help is available on GOV.UK, just search ‘self-assessment' to find out more."
