Government borrowing has increased to £19.1bn in February 2021, the highest for the month since records began in 1993.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), borrowing was £17.6bn higher compared with the same period last year.
Borrowing for the year has reached £278.8bn so far, as a result of the introduction of the pandemic support measures. The figures also reveal the Government spent £3.9bn on job support measures alone.
The ONS added that public sector net borrowing increased by £228.2bn to £278.8bn in the period.
The ONS said:
“Although the impact of the pandemic on the public finances is becoming clearer, its effects are not fully captured in this release, meaning that estimates of accrued tax receipts and borrowing are subject to greater than usual uncertainty.”
